The History
In the centre of Cambridge is a 25 acre common which is popular in summer for students and visitors alike to have picnics, play games and generally relax. The square is called Parker’s piece and is named after Edward Parker a college cook who had a lease on the common. Parker’s Piece has a cricket pitch and pavilion named after Jack Hobbs, a famous cricketer who was born in Cambridge.
In the centre of Parker’s Piece is a lampost reputed to be the oldest electric lampost in Cambridge. It is more well known as the Reality Checkpoint. There are several theories about why it is called this, however students from the old art college apparently painted this on the lampost in the 1970’s.
