History
Cambridge has a long association with research into the nature of the atom. The Cavendish Laboratory is a world leading research centre into atomic and nuclear physics. Established in 1874 under the guidance of James Clerk Maxwell, the Cavendish laboratory has had many notable researchers as students and also staff. JJ Thomson, who discovered the electron, was a Cavendish Professor. A small plaque in Free School Lane commemorates the discovery. Thomson’s students included Ernest Rutherford, who discovered nuclear fission, and Charles Wilson, who invented the cloud chamber.
